  • PRIN. V. K. RAJWADE


    Prin. V. K. Rajwade (1921 to 1925) : M.A.. Acquired his first B.A. in 1982 securing Varjivandas Sanskrit Scholarship his Second B.A. from Deccan College in 1883 & getting First class with English and Sanskrit. Appointed Dakshina Fellow and passed his M.A. in 1886 with English and Sanskrit. He worked as professor of English for Nine years at D.J. Sindh College. Principal M.T.B. Arts College from 1921 to 1925 was a profound scholar, He guided the affairs of the Board of Volunteers in the manner of a chief among equals, with circumspection, ability and transparent honesty was Chairman of the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute.

  • PRIN. D. R. GADGIL


    Prin. D. R. Gadgil (1925-1930) : M.A., M.Lit. Principal M.T.B. Arts College from 1925-1930. Remarkable man unusually gifted with excellent qualities both of head and heart. He piloted M.T.B. Arts College with great tact and ability. He latter on resumed the position of a Vice Chairman Planning Commission Government of India. He was the academic spirit incarnet that he resigned from the mpost of Assistant Secretary Finance Department Government of Bombay to join as the Principal of M.T.B. Arts College. He later on became Director of the newly started Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics of Poona in 1930.

  • PRIN. N. M. SHAH


    Prin. N. M. Shah (1930 to 1950) : MA (Cantab), FRAS Born scholar, Renouned Mathematician, BA from Fergusson College in 1912 securing the Duke of Edinburgh Fellowship, Fellow of Fergusson College. Studied in Trinity College Cambridge for four years and a half and was elected senior Scholar of the Trinity College. In 1919 he passed the Mathematical Tripose part II and was declared a B*(Star) Wrangler. On this result the Trinity College awarded him a Peter Leigh Research Exhibition and year's prize. Worked as a professor of Mathematics at the New Poona College and in 1922 was selected as Principal M.T.B. Arts College in 1930 succeeding Principal D. R. Gadgil.

  • PROF. V. K. NIMKAR


    Prof. V. K. Nimkar : M.Sc. Manchester University. Obtained B.Sc. Wilson College with 1st class in 1919. Obtained M.Sc. of Manchester University in 1925. Professor of Science in M.T.B. College from 1920 was deputed by Sarvajanik Education Society to Manchester for further studies for M.Sc.

  • D. B. CHUNILAL M. GANDHI


    D.B. Chunilal M. Gandhi : B.A., L.L.B. Advocate Notary Public. Principal Sarvajanik Law College. Chairman Managing Committee Sarvajanik Education Society since 1912. He took his B.A. in 1892. He won the Elphinston prize and the Cobden Club Medal. He was a teacher and then a superintendent Elphinston College Hostel Bombay in between 1894 to 1896. His association with Sarvajanik Education Society since its inception has filled a large space in its history. In 1928 he started the drawing and design class at Surat for the revival of local home industries, and the Society took over its management in 1934. He is a liberal in politics. In 1907 he worked as Secretary of the Indian National Congress held at Surat which was addressed by Sri Aurobindo Ghosh who was the president of its session. He was an eminent educationist and advocate. In June 1935 Government conferred on him the title of 'Diwan Bahadur' in recognition of his manifold public service especially in the cause of education. As a result of his persuasive appeals thousands of rupees had been contributed by the public to the funds of the Sarvajanik Education Society. It is because of this Sarvajnik Education Society could erect its academic empire through out the 20th century.

  • DR. JAYANT PATHAK


    Dr. Jayant Pathak (1953 to 1980) : Prof. & head, Department of Gujarati. Very learned teacher, professor, creative poet literary creative vision incarnate well recognized literary critic. Awarded many prizes, 3 Gold Medals including Ranjitram Gold Medal, was a president of Gujarati Sahitya Sabha in 1989.

  • DR. R. I. PATEL


    Dr. R. I. Patel : M.A., Ph.D., Prof. of English in M.T.B. Arts College from 1941 to 1942 and Second time from 1942 to 1950 as Prin. N. M. Shah insisted and persuaded him to join M.T.B. as professor. He accepted volunteership and worked in M.T.B. from 1950 to 1973. On account of the request of South Gujarat University to join as Head of the English Department of University. Sarvajanik Education Society spared him and offered his services to the University from 1973 to 1977 as professor and Head . The eminent scholar, eloquent professor, horasious reader, very popularly known as Mobile Encyclopedia amongst the students and scholars of the Society, who retired as volunteer from M.T.B. in 1980.

  • MISS. A. D. COOPER


    Miss A. D. Cooper : B.A., D.T.(leeds) Lady Superintendent of Sarvajanik Girls High School. The very first lady Superintendent of the first fullfledged girls school in Surat, who worked here from 1934 to 1937 and the school marked the height of progress facing unimaginable challenges during her time as it was the DeNovo experiment of starting a separate institution imparting education to female education exclusively in a separate institution for first time in Gujarat.

  • DR. C. M. DESAI


    Prin. C. M. Desai : B.Sc., Ph.D. Joined M.T.B. from 1946 to 1966 as professor of Chemistry and resumed the post of a Principal in 1966 and worked as friend, philosopher and guide for the students community upto 1976, and genuinely and popularly earned the title of a 'Vigyan Maharshi' in Gujarat. Being a research scholar and moving laboratory, he taught and motivated 30 students to secure M.Phil. degree and 55 students to secure Ph.D. degree creditably, he got his 265 research papers published as the scientific treasure of knowledge in utmost 17 journals of academic repute. It is his genius which got always reflected life long in his teaching research original scientific creativity and with the result he could pave the path for future research scientists formulating the academic format of M.Phil for the first time in India. As a Scientist he was awarded Gold Medal for his research work and spirit by Gujarat University, and Fellowship of Royal Society of Chemistry London. There are 9 publications in English and 3 in Gujarati to his credit as master pieces in the Science of Chemistry. At present at the age of 95 he is serving Sarvajanik Education Society according his inborn talents, grace, glamour and academic glory to Sarvajanik Education Society as its President.

  • K. L. DESAI


    Prin. K. L. Desai (1950 to 1962) : Joined M.T.B. college as Professor of English in 1929 and thereafter worked as Principal of M.T.B. Arts College from (1950 to 1962). He was deputed to Cambridge University for the further study of Tripose in 1925, which he passed in second class and rejoined M.T.B. in 1927 as professor of English and later on held the post of a Principal M.T.B. Arts College till 1962, rendering his untinted academic and visionary services of a literary scholar, and critic and dedicated administrator.

  • K. C. MEHTA


    Prin. K. C. Mehta : Joined M.T.B. College as Prof. of Gujarati from June-1946 and Principal from July-1970 to July-1983. He was Secretary Sarvajanik Education Society from 1961 to 1994. He was an ardent scholar academician literary critic and a popular professor who enriched M.T.B. College as well as Sarvajanik Education Society with his work inborn vision wealth of knowledge, dedication and while sincerity of academic spirit of Gurutva in its spiritual sense of the term.

  • V. R. TRIVEDI


    Prof. V. R. Trivedi : Joined M.T.B. College as Professor of English & Sanskrit from 1921 to 1950 He taught English, Sanskrit and Gujarati in M.T.B. College for so many years. Besides being a Professor, he was a literary critic of a national repute, and every intch scholar and a genius of the world of literature, still holding the charismatic position of a role model in the hearts and minds of the scholars and the world of literature posthumously.

  • J. R. JOGLEKAR


    Prin. J. R. Joglekar (1916 to 1952) : Principal, Sarvajanik High School from 1916 to 1930, Principal, Jain High School from 1931 to 1939, Again Principal Sarvajanik High School from 1939 to 1952, Secretary Sarvajanik Education Society from 1917 to 1918 and besides this he offered his services as Superintendent of Girls High School.

    Prin. A. R. Desai, M.A., M.Sc.(Eco). London. Principal K.P. College of Commerce from 1959 to 1974. Vice Chancellor South Gujarat University, Surat from 1974 to 1979. Eminent professor, Economist of the first rank, student of Prof. C. N. Vakil and research oriented versatile personality, strict disciplinarian, transparent administrator. He who has remoulded the academic scenario of University into ascending order. As a Principal of K.P. College of Commerce he had motivated, iniciated, and reshaped the innumerable scholars of South Gujarat with his teaching, ability knowledge and originality of thinking.

  • M. G. PIMPUTKAR


    Shri M. G. Pimputkar, Who had rendered his academic services as a teacher of English in the capacity of a Research Fellow on account of his exceptional ability genius in depth knowledge of English Literature and Language and research orientation from 1937 to 1938. He thereafter became the collector of Panchmahal District and executed excellent administrative services in the interest of public and the then government.

  • C. C. SHAH


    Prin. C. C. Shah : He started his career as a school teacher and became Principal & sculptor of Jeevan Bharti School. The well reputed academic Light House of the State. Later on he became Principal of V. T. Choksi Sarvajanik College of Education from 1961 to 1967. He was appointed very first Vice Chancellor of South Gujarat University who prior to that formulated the blueprint and contributed lot to the process of establishment of our University. The height of it is that his father Shri Chunilal Ghelabhai Shah was the founder of Sarvajanik Education Society, Surat in 1912 and who started very first English School which was popularly known as Dhilgli School in Surat in 1888.

  • JUSTICE A. M. AHMADI


    Justice A. M. Ahmadi : Date of birth : 25.3.1932 at Surat (India), Former student of V. T. Choksi Law College Second LL.B., 1953. Qualification : Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.), Joined the Bar in the year 1954-55. Appointed Judge, City Civil & Sessions Court, Ahmedabad in March, 1964. Appointed Secretary to Govt. of Gujarat, Legal Department in June, 1974. Appointed Judge, High Court of Gujarat on September 2, 1976. Worked as Chairman of: Advisory Board under Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act, 1974, Advisory Board under Prevention of Black Marketing, and Maintenance of Supplies of Essential Commodities Act, 1980, Gujarat State Third Pay Commission; and Also worked as a Member of the Ravi & Beas Waters Disputes Tribunal under the Rajiv-Longowal Settlement (Punjab Settlement). Appointed Judge, Supreme Court of India in December, 1988. Worked as President, Supreme Court Legal Aid Committee in 1989 and as Executive Chairman, Committee for Implementing Legal Aid Schemes in India from Ist November, 1990 to 24th October, 1994. Elevated as Chief Justice of India w.e.f. the forenoon of 25th October, 1994. Patron-in-Chief for Legal Aid Schemes in India. Doctorate Degree, Honoris Causa conferred by University of Kurukshetra on February 27, 1994; by Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak on March 26, 1995 and by University of Kanpur on April 7, 1995. Retired on 24.3.1997.

  • JUSTICE D. A. DESAI


    Justice D. A. Desai : B.A., L.L.B., Date of Birth 9th May, 1920, Early Education at Jamnabai Sarvajanik Middle School, Dihen, J. & T. V. Sarvajanik High School, Surat., M. T. B. Arts College, Surat and V. T. Choksi Sarvajanik Law College, Surat.1945-Enrolled as Advocate of Bombay High Court, 1960-Enrolled advocate at Gujarat High Court. During this period as advocate he appeared in Civil Criminal, revenue labor and industrial court and also central excise. Appointed Assistant sessions Judge in 1960, promoted as District and sessions Judge in 1961. Elevated to the High Court of Gujarat from February 1968 To May1977. Elevated as the judge of the Supreme Court May 1977 to 9th May 1985. He has rendered nearly six hundred judgments on various branches of Law during his tenure as high court and Supreme Court judgeship. Appointed as the Chairman Law Commission of India from 1985 to 1988. He has presented 40 reports to the Government as the Chairman of Law Commission of India. His report on Gram Nayalaya was recently accepted by the Government while enacting the Gram Nayalaya Act 2009. He has also served as the Vice Chancellor of Brihad Gujarat Sanskrit Parishad. He had been awarded National Citizen Award by Government of India. He has been also conferred with Gujarat Ratna Award by Gujarat Vikas Sangh in 1995. Veer Narmad South Gujarat University conferred him with degree of Ph.D. in 2000 for his outstanding contribution in the judiciary. He has written several articles and books, The three books written him are also published during his Amrut Mahotsav. 'Social Justice a Dialogue', 'Law and Social Justice', D.A.Desai A. Warrior Judge'. He will remember for his penchant for Social Justice. He was described as Lone Socialist Justice in Gujarat High Court by Dr. Upendra Baxi.

    Shri Pravin Joshi :

    The veteran dramatist of Gujarati Stage Late Pravin Joshi was a student of M.T.B. Arts College, Surat managed by Sarvajanik Education Society, Surat. He studied for his Bachelor of Arts Degree in the College during the year 1952-53.

    Mr. Pravin Joshi is always remembered for his innovative approach in Gujarati theatre. He made his career for Indian National Theatre (INT), Mumbai. He directed and acted several professional plays and was one of the most successful artists of all time in Gujarati Drama. He developed total professionalism in Gujarati Dramas at Mumbai and Gujarat. He was popularly known as 'the Prince of Gujarati Theatre'.
